Ms. Fungayi Jessie Majome was appointed Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission on March 20, 2024. In May 2024, she was elected as a Bureau Member of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), representing Southern Africa. Notably, Ms. Majome became the inaugural Chairperson of the SADC Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions in 2024, playing a crucial role in its establishment and advocacy for its formation.
She is a registered legal practitioner born on 20 December 1971. From 2008 to 2018, Ms. Majome represented the Harare West constituency in the National Assembly of the Zimbabwean Parliament for two terms. She defended human rights as a legislator and earned multiple accolades as a result of using her position as a member of the National Assembly to promote these rights. She chaired the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs. She was a member of the Portfolio Committee on Local Government Rural and Urban Development as well as the Parliamentary Legal Committee. She was a member of the 25-person Parliamentary Select Committee (COPAC) that was responsible for the development of the new Constitution during Zimbabwe’s 2009–2013 constitution-making process, which was done in fulfilment of provisions of the Global Political Agreement. She acted as COPAC’s spokesperson and co-vice chair.
Ms. F.J. Majome served as Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister for Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development after serving as Deputy Minister for Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs. She is a holder of Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of South Africa (2004), the Masters in Women’s Law (MSWL) from the University of Zimbabwe (2008), Post-graduate Diploma in Women’s Law (Dip. W.L. 1996), and the Bachelor of Laws Honours (LLB) from the University of Zimbabwe (1995), among others.
She served on numerous boards, including those for the Ndabaningi Sithole Foundation, the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers’ Association (where she chaired the Professional Interests Committee) and the Mutemwa Leprosy Catholic Care Centre (MLCC).
She has shown her steadfast dedication to combating corruption and preserving the principles of good governance during her tenure as a Commissioner at the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, which preceded her nomination as Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission. During her time as a commissioner, she demonstrated her commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in public institutions.
